Team Highlight: Data and Analytics
Brandon Hutton is a one-person team at Data and Analytics. He develops and maintains a wide range of dashboards that support both Office of Human Resources (OHR) needs and requests from partners across the university. These dashboards are designed to take complex HR processes and translate them into clear, easy-to-understand data points.
Most of the data comes from Workday, the university's system of record for HR information, and Hutton uses Tableau to turn that data into visual reports and dashboards that highlight trends, progress and outcomes. A significant portion of his work happens behind the scenes, where Hutton cleans and organizes raw data so it's accurate, consistent and ready to be used in dashboards.
Recently, Hutton has been working closely with teams across OHR to move dashboards beyond simply sharing information and toward telling a cohesive story that supports decision-making and day-to-day business processes. He's also been preparing for the transition of dashboards and reports from Tableau to Power BI, Microsoft's reporting and analytics platform, and partnering with external stakeholders to help launch and expand HR analytics services across the university.
Meet the Team
Brandon Hutton, manager
- What's your at-work or at-home superpower? They're actually the same thing: I'm task-obsessed. The moment someone emails me a request or brings something up in a meeting, my brain switches into problem-solving mode and I usually don't stop until the job is done. That carries over at home, too. I take on a lot of house projects, some definitely outside my scope, but I tend to push through until they're finished. Occasionally, I pause and think I should call an expert, then remember the internet can usually point me toward a solution!
- What's your best 无码专区 working day life hack? I have two. First, I make a point to connect with analytics teams across campus. Even though we all work with different data sources, the core concepts are often the same. Getting feedback from colleagues across the university has been invaluable — everyone brings a unique perspective that helps me refine roadmaps, queries and dashboards. The second is approaching projects with an "agile" mindset. Especially in analytics, the first version is rarely perfect. Setting that expectation upfront makes it easier to iterate, improve and ultimately deliver something that stakeholders are genuinely excited about.
- Do you have a hobby? I try to keep at least one active hobby going at all times. Over the past two years, I've spent a lot of time bouldering (indoor rock climbing) and I also play in an adult dek hockey league. Outside of that, I'm usually spending time with my wife and daughter or tackling the next house project.
