Shelley Anna Reappointed as Vice Provost for Faculty
June 1, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce that I have reappointed Dr. Shelley Anna to a second three-year term as vice provost for faculty, effective July 1, 2026.
Dr. Anna’s reappointment marks another chapter in her deep commitment to Carnegie Mellon. After earning her bachelor’s degree in physics here, she returned to join our faculty in 2003, eventually serving as a collaborative senior leader and associate dean in the College of Engineering.
Since stepping into the vice provost for faculty role in 2023, Dr. Anna has demonstrated exceptional leadership. She has built upon the core values of the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty (OVPF) to support our academic community's excellence. Her first term focused on building a more responsive infrastructure that prioritizes clear communication and thoughtful support for our academic community.
Under Dr. Anna’s guidance, the OVPF has achieved several significant milestones, including:
- Developing a framework for teaching assessment and launching the Faculty Forward and Lead Well professional development programs.
- Revamping the OVPF website and launching the monthly Faculty Forward newsletter to enhance transparency and communication across our global locations.
- Initiating multi-year projects to streamline the faculty appointment process and create a more unified Faculty Information System to clarify administrative workflows and key faculty metrics.
- Conducting comprehensive assessments to better understand faculty professional growth needs and expanding engagement with institutional memberships to organizations like NCFDD and Academic Impressions.
Dr. Anna’s unwavering dedication to this work ensures that Carnegie Mellon supports every faculty member and postdoc – from our Pittsburgh campus to Silicon Valley, Kigali, and Doha – through the full arc of their career. She continues to serve as a vital bridge between the administration and the faculty body, partnering closely with the Faculty Senate on matters of shared governance. It is because of this collaborative spirit and her clear vision for the faculty experience that I am so pleased she will continue in this role.
Please join me in congratulating Shelley on her reappointment. I look forward to her continued leadership as we work together to sustain the future of ÎÞÂëרÇø.
Sincerely,
James H. Garrett Jr.
Provost and Chief Academic Officer
