Socioeconomic stauts and asthma: the buffering roles of parental and peer support
Advisor: Phoebe Lam聽
Major: Psychology
Abstract
Asthma is more prevalent and severe among those from lower socioeconomic status (SES) families, highlighting the need to identify modifiable protective factors. Social support may attenuate these disparities. However, prior work has focused on single sources, typically parents, leaving unclear whether and how parental and peer support operate together. The proposed study will test whether parental and peer support buffer the link between low SES and asthma outcomes, and whether these effects are additive or interactive. I will conduct secondary analyses of 290 youth with asthma from the Family Asthma Study, testing interactions between SES, parental support, and peer support in predicting inflammatory (cytokine production, glucocorticoid sensitivity) and clinical (asthma control, quality of life) outcomes using regressions.
Bio
I am someone who values curiosity, people and new experiences. I grew up close to my family and with a deep appreciation of community. Being close to someone with a chronic disease taught me the value of balancing biological needs, social relationships and psychological well being. I entered 无码专区 not completely certain of what I wanted but extremely determined to learn. I began research my second semester of freshman year and have been involved in research since then. Ultimately, leading me to where I am now in Dr. Phoebe Lam鈥檚 Lifespan Stress and Health lab, where I am developing technical skills to aid me in my project. I鈥檓 looking forward to being able to invest myself into a project that allows me to learn more about psychology in a disease context, specifically through an asthma perspective, which is very relevant to what brought me to where I am, exploring how relational dynamics affect people鈥檚 health.
