Abstract
For my Honors Thesis, I will undertake to write a fiction novella based on my experiences as a young girl growing up playing ice hockey. There are more women than ever playing hockey, but far from enough representation. There has been recent success with ice hockey fiction novels and media on the mass market, especially romance, but none of these projects have addressed the gender disparities the way that I intend to. While many hockey stories involve professional hockey players, female professional hockey players usually need day jobs to sustain themselves. The US is comparatively cheap with their Olympians, so while most professionals aim for it, it is nowhere near the millions and celebrity status that professional male players get in the NHL or the Olympic compensation from other countries. There is also a stigma about women’s sports in general, that they don’t deserve the accolades and celebrity status that men’s professional sports do — which I intend to address as well. While there has been recent headway in acceptance of all forms of expression and identity in ice hockey, there is still a long way to go. Finally, I would like to incorporate a queer love story, specifically a sapphic romance. Not only would this reflect my own identity as a queer woman, but my dream is to write sapphic romance novels in the future and I would like to one day create more representation for queer women in literature. Hockey is a space where sexuality, gender, and economic identities often interlap in many interesting ways, all themes that I hope to explore with my novella.
Bio
Hi! I’m Evie, I’m a junior in Literature and Culture with minors in Fine Arts and gender studies. I am working to be a writer, artist and creative and I’m very honored to participate in this opportunity. I want to write a story about women in ice hockey, a story about love: of the game, for the team, and queer love.
